On another note, I’m still thinking through how you distinguished the killing of innocents from conventional military action vs. hand-to-hand action. What I’m struggling with is that the conventional military, which has technological superiority, has the option of the bomb drop, while the less technologically capable party does not have that “luxury”, so your logic almost seems to confine less technologically capable groups to the category of savages in the context of war, and it seems to grant a pass to technologically-capable militaries. Just because the conventional military members get to distance themselves from the atrocities they’re committing, it makes them more humane? I suppose it comes down to the fact that the conventional military can always argue, “well, I didn’t want to kill the innocents, they just happened to be there when I dropped the bomb” whereas the hand-to-hand killer clearly intended the killing of the innocent. But if I were on the receiving end of the conventional military action and had my innocent loved one killed by a bomb drop, I probably wouldn’t be so understanding of such rationalizations and would probably feel just as wronged as the person who had their innocent loved one killed by a savage hand-to hand action.
I’m sure Hamas could produce plenty of killers Darryl would feel comfortable being neighbors with if they had a vast air force subsidized by American taxpayers.
I believe he was making the point that the indirect killing of innocents by the military during a bombing for example is something that the military doesn’t want but unfortunately happens. In the Hamas attack the objective was to slaughter women, children, and as many people as possible.

I think that we recognize that a human mind has to go to a very very dark place to bring itself to murder an innocent child by hand, in person face to face, and so that crime is especially abhorrent and frightening. To drop a bomb from an airplane probably doesn’t require the human mind to go to such a dark place - there is enough distance there that the mind can avoid seeing the horror of the action, they don’t see the live faces before they kill them, and they can maintain the claim that they never wanted to kill children and it was just an unfortunate consequence, so they get to keep the appearance of being humane and civil. But in both cases children were killed, and for the parents of the children I imagine it feels the same.
It’s no wonder that the Native Americans were constantly referred to as savages, being that they were much much less technologically capable than the American pioneers/settlers/military. The ironic implication seems to be that the path toward being viewed as humane in war is the development of advanced weaponry that can kill from a distance.

pretty disappointing. slowly grinding millions of people down with a military occupation that restricts medication, supplies of all kinds while encouraging more and more settlements and condoning violence against the people already living there isn't as bad because the guy doing it is fun to have a bbq with on the weekends? bombing apartment buildings is the way civilized people do things? I think most Nazis probably made pretty ok neighbors too. Didn't stop the Jews from tracking them down in Argentina and then hanging them. the banality of evil isn't a big deal anymore? when you treat people like animals you shouldn't be shocked when they act like animals. Were Native Americans animals when they scalped people and cut off genitals and fed them to the American settlers? We called them savages then too but looking back without all of the emotion of the moment do we really blame them? They were angry and desperate.
Native Americans were scalping each other long before Europeans arrived. It was part of the culture. Like ripping hearts out of live people. Anger and despair had nothing to do with it.

Westerners have convinced themselves that air power kills quickly and cleanly.
Only when we’ve lost air superiority, say the British at Dunkirk or the Germany in 1944, do we start to consider air power as a terror weapon.
Air raids don’t kill all their victims quickly and painlessly.
