It has come to my attention that some of you guys who subscribed through knowing me on Twitter are not aware of the main Martyr Made feed. That’s where you will find my long-form history podcasts on subjects like the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the Jonestown cult, Dostoevsky & Nietzsche, and more. Those podcasts are not on the feed you use for these Substack episodes, but I’m figuring out how to combine them in a way that will be least disruptive. Good idea. Myself i dont use twitter (dormant since creation) or facebook (dormant since 8 years at least) at all and I can't say I feel im missing out. I think being subjected to the reach of the whole world just can't be good for me .
Jonestown. Helps to understand civil conflict in America and what the government will do to quell uprisings. I had no idea that our modern history included so much violence.
I absolutely loved that series as well. I've listened/watched a few series and docs on Jonestown and Darryl's was definitely one of the most comprehensive.
I honestly can’t. Being raised Jewish, it’s really hard for me to listen again. Over time, I have finally broken my knee-jerk reaction to back Israel. Now it’s just hard to un-see and un-hear. There’s no talking to anyone in my family about it.
I have had a best friend for 20+ years that’s like a brother now. His family is my family. His daughter is my god-daughter. Our families have both been there for each other through the loss of each of our fathers. They are first and second generation Palestinian-Americans. We have done our part the best we can. But it’s so frustrating to watch it play out. I no longer have any skin in the game for Israel. With the other side, 2 wrongs don’t make a right. But I understand what blowback is. I understand that what Britain did and just walked away from is atrocious.I understand that what is continually reaped, will be continually sown. Perpetual imprisonment (peaceful or not) or eradication of a small ethnic group and their descendants are really the only solutions one side is willing to offer. The other side is offering integration or perpetual war. There is no reasonable internal solution. Forced integration would bring perpetual, country wide war.
That’s interesting - I’m also Jewish, born, raised, and still practicing, but I don’t have the same reaction to listening to Fear & Loathing. I think the reason I like it so much is that Darryl gives a fair retelling of the history from both vantage points, and constantly asks the listener, “what would you do?” The story has no heroes and no villains, just people all doing their best to survive in a hostile world.
No one else approaches the history of the conflict this way, at the true human level. It’s easy to pick sides and condemn either the early Zionists or the current Palestinians and to use victim, villain, hero, and other labels. That’s what most people do and I find it unsatisfying and downright harmful. We’ll never get to a resolution of the conflict if people don’t even understand how it started.
I understand the resistance and hesitance you feel my Grandmother always talked about Israel and making a trip there and taking me with her because of my attachment to our faith. The state is not the people, and the state is now what G_d would have for his people.
No one in that whole debacle operates cleanly, everyone was looking out for themselves.
Absolutely changed my perspective on the middle east. Spent 23 months in Kuwait/Iraq when everything cooked off the last time. Your insight and explanations have been eye opening to say the least.
Mr Cooper, a topic idea. What's going on in Mexico? How did it get to this point? The border, cartels, the death culture. My uncle is a Catholic priest and has said the country of Mexico has had a sort of exorcism performed on it (obviously not the same as an individual exorcism, more like a focused prayer or series of prayers over days or weeks for a troubled country). The implication is that the Catholic church considers Mexico to be possessed in a way. And it definitely is possessed by some problems, if not demons then drugs, lawlessness and violence.
I'm not sure if you are a listener to other podcasts, or if you have ever listened specifically to The Lex Friedman Podcast. If you have not, I would recommend listening to his latest podcast with Stephen Kotkin on his opinions about the situation in Ukraine. Many of his opinions are different from yours and I would be interested to hear your thoughts on them.
