Listen now (27 mins) | Hi everyone. I know, what with all the chaos in the Middle East, many of you have been wondering where I’ve been. Life has been imposing itself on me in ways I couldn’t wriggle out of, but that’s about over now. I’ve got a couple interviews scheduled this week, and will release an expanded an updated version of The Administration of Savagery (on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict from 1948-82) soon. After that, I will release another long-form episode on the post-1982 period, with a focus on Iran, Hezbollah, and Hamas.
If you go onto breaking points with jocko thursday, and krystal says something out of pocket... please take off your “news media decorum” hat and put on the “twitter” hat.
I remember about a decade ago reading an article about Gideon Levy. It described him as the most hated man in Israel. Why? Because every week, he went to the occupied territories and described what he saw there.
Hi Darryl, im a long time listner an subscriber. I live in Jerusalem Israel. I was meaning to contact you for a while, I thought your series about the Israeli Palestinian conflict was really great although you did have a few rather big mistunderstandings. I gotta say Im very disappointed about you sending this rather poor piece of propagnda as the first published piece of yours since the holocaust wich was perpetrated in the south of Israel by the arabs agains inocent jewish men woman and especially children. Il be happy to explain all of the errors of his speech and give you my point of view on the current situation here. All the best to you and your subscribers and anyone who is looking for the truth.
This short piece by Eric Hoffer was published in the LA times in 1968! I am amazed and also saddened by how well it has aged.
"The Jews are a peculiar people: things permitted to other nations are forbidden to the Jews.
Other nations drive out thousands, even millions of people and there is no refugee problem. Russian did it, Poland and Czechoslovakia did it, Turkey threw out a million Greeks, and Algeria a million Frenchman. Indonesia threw out heaven knows how many Chinese-and no one says a word about refugees. But in the case of Israel the displaced Arabs have become eternal refugees.
Everyone insists that Israel must take back every single Arab. Arnold Toynbee calls the displacement of the Arabs an atrocity greater than any committed by the Nazis.
Other nations when victorious on the battlefield dictate peace terms. But when Israel is victorious it must sue for peace. Everyone expects the Jews to be the only real Christians in this world.
Other nations when they are defeated survive and recover but should Israelbe defeated it would be destroyed. Had Nasser triumphed last June he would have wiped Israel off the map, and no one would have lifted a finger to save the Jews.
No commitment to the Jews by any government, including our own, is worth the paper it is written on. There is a cry of outrage all over the world when people die in Vietnam or when two Negroes are executed in Rhodesia. But when Hitler slaughtered Jews no one remonstrated with him.
The Swedes, who are ready to break of diplomatic relations with America because of what we do in Vietnam, did not let out a peep when Hitler was slaughtering Jews. They sent Hitler choice iron ore, and ball bearings, and serviced his troop trains to Norway.
The Jews are alone in the world. If Israel survives, it will be solely because of Jewish efforts. And Jewish resources. Yet at this moment Israel is our only reliable and unconditional ally. We can rely more on Israel than Israel can rely on us. And one has only to imagine what would have happened last summer had the Arabs and their Russian backers won the war to realize how vital the survival of Israel is toAmerica and the West in general.
I have a premonition that will not leave me; as it goes with Israel so will it go with all of us. Should Israel perish the holocaust will be upon us.
The Azerbaijanis submitted the armenians, of Nagorno-Karabakh, 120,000 CIVILIANS, to a 9 month total blockade denying them food, fuel and medecine. Barely a word in western media, no Underground podcast with Jocko and yourself, no campaign of celebrities and western politicians with the Armenian 🇦🇲 flag on their social media profile... nothing. Then a murderous Azerbaijanis military assault took place on September 19th. The whole armenian population of Nagorno-Karabakh fled to Armenia. Typical playbook of ethnic cleansing. No sanctions or boycott campaign against Azerbaijan, no backlash or hate crimes against people of tartar descent or Muslims elsewhere in the world related to this... nothing.
There's a long tradition of genocide and ethnic cleansing in the history of the "civilized world", but it's 'funny' how it's seems that ethnic cleansing is now a 'privileged' given to certain cultures.
The Turk got away with one of the worst genocidal campaigns in modern history and one of the largest population transfer (up to that point) with the benediction of the League of Nation.
There won't be any lasting solution for Gaza apart from a population transfer. Instead of sending billions to Israel to bomb Gaza, why not make a deal with Egypt, Jordan and the other Arab states for an economic incentive package for taking in Palestinian refugees?
With everything there is to say about the current state of affairs....you choose to give increased exposure to this person!?
Criticism of Israel is not out of bounds by all means, but in the wake of what has just taken place, and the threat that is faced by the Jewish state and Jews everywhere, this is not the time.
What could possibly be in your heart to choose to publicize this person?
Mr Levy is a pariah in the Jewish community for good reason.
I ache for peace with our cousins, the sons of Ishmael , and so do most Israelis and Jews everywhere. This proctologist’s view of Israel does not advance that agenda one bit
Another short missive from the Canadian Nova Scotian retired chaplain. After wading through (joyfully) podcasts from History Hit , namely ancient history and warfare I looked to the substack once more for a timely binge of your latest episodes.
What I value about your offerings is that although our politics would not always land in the same place I very much appreciate being pushed to think outside my comfort zone. And where we agree I raise a cheer when I drive as well. Your episodes regarding Job are an excellent exegesis. You have done the hard work. Job was the hardest translation I undertook when studying Hebrew in seminary. Being poetry it followed none of the normal Masoretic scribe rules. A metaphor for the suffering of Israel. His friends being at their best when they were silent and just present with Job. All these things you touched and I certainly have enjoyed listening.
I veer as well into the world of the unravelling with you and Jocko. My politics if given a label likely would be centrist liberal in the classical sense but I do not find myself hammering my dashboard in anger when hearing views that press upon me. Instead I value the discourse that sadly is not too present in our world now with so much stark polarization.
I don’t follow Twitter much because it seems to be a very different kind of forum that spews rather than informs.
But to date I am resolved to remain a faithful listener to the things with which I agree , disagree or am prompted to a place of sober second thought.
Much profundity. A lecture by noted neurotic left-wing freak, Gidon Levy. Now I really understand Middle East politics. Look, here's a lecture by an American professor about how White policeman hunt down innocent blacks who dindu nuffin because muh racism. Yeesh.
Short lecture by Israeli journalist Gideon Levy (27 mins)

Even if its only for a second.

WTF Darryl?
A delicious listen. You are a must-follow and membership.
I look forward to getting a better understanding and history of the region/ territory that has become known as Palestinian.
Hey Darryl, where is this talk from? And who is the audience?

One point not mentioned by Levy in this occupation discussion is that Israel ceased occupying Gaza in 2005.
